Op. 1

Song of the Common Starling

Seven Songs for Flute, Violoncello, and Vibraphone
Spring 2017

About the Piece

This collection began as a musing on the bird song inspirations of Olivier Messiaen. His unique interest in birdsongs seemed profoundly informed – notating the music of nature, the songs we might fail to notice. I seek, with this piece, to inspire the feeling of a gentle stroll through the forest, perhaps the forests around Furman University. Each of these birds is native to Greenville, South Carolina – one could take a walk, and immediately catch the tune.

I’ve dedicated my first complete composition to my mother, JoEllen Smith – who always encourages my artistic inclinations and inspires me every day, and to my father, Alan Smith – who never misses a concert or play, and emboldens me to do my best every day.
