Design Concept

In a world defined by binaries – male or female, good or bad, North or South, them or us – this design seeks to highlight the absurdity of cultural norms and break the mold of dualistic thought. The garments reflect influences from 1690s fashion in silhouette and collar style. With the limited color palette of greyscale featuring pops of red, the design establishes the world of the play as a stylized version of reality. The color red – the traditional mark of the “harlot” or the “slut” in works like The Scarlet Letter – will be transformed into a symbol for feminism. Characters who boast the color red face the world, armed with sexual freedom, awareness, and individuality.
